The collection contains correspondence, business papers, diaries, and plantation and personal records of Stephen Duncan and his son, Stephen Duncan, Jr., of Natchez, Mississippi, and New York City. Ante-bellum papers include checks drawn on Fuller and Vaught of Natchez; tax receipts and an assessor's list of taxable property for Adams County; and letters, statements of account, and a list of securities from Charles P. Leverich, a New York City broker (1849-1860). Items of the Civil War period include receipts for cotton purchased by Duncan as agent for Martin of Liverpool, England; Confederate States records of the value of cotton, slaves, implements, clothing, livestock, and other property confiscated from Duncan by the Federal Army (1862, 1864); and a letter offering Duncan the use of a light-draught gunboat for the removal of his family to Memphis. Items post-1867 include correspondence and business papers of Stephen Duncan, Jr. Correspondence consists of letters concerning the sale of Camperdown Plantation (1873); plantation management, farming conditions, and property holdings (1875-1884); a partition of the Duncan properties (1876-1879); and the use of Chinese labor on the plantations (1872). Plantations mentioned in the collection include L'Argent, Auburn, Camperdown, Carlisle, Duncan, Duncannon, Duncansby, Ellisle, Homochitto, Middlesex, Oakley, Oxford, Rescue, Reserve, and the Attakapas Plantation. Business papers include items relating to the estate of Stephen Duncan (1867); to a lawsuit against Stephen Duncan, Jr. and the executors of the estate of Stephen Duncan (1873); and to a partnership named Natchez Cotton Mills, a manufacturer of cotton and woolen goods (1877). Bound volumes include diaries kept by Stephen Duncan, Jr. during trips to Europe in 1856 and in 1871-1872; journals and record books containing personal expenditures, records of cotton and sugar crops, and lists of slaves (1851-1895); and a notebook containing the Latin exercises of Samuel P. Duncan.
